I have been engineering records for many years, learning my craft from many noted producers and engineers along the way, including John Leckie, Pip Williams, Johnny Marr, Danny Saber, Arthur Baker and many others. My years working as chief engineer at Chapel Studios gave me a solid grounding in recording many different types of music, from rock to rap, pop to folk. Since leaving Chapel in 1994, I have been working as a freelance engineer and producer.
My first freelance project was with Manchester duo ‘Electronic’, Johnny Marr and Bernard Sumner’s “supergroup”, also featuring Karl Bartos from Kraftwerk. The album went on to chart in the U.K. top 10, and launched the beginning of many successful years of working alongside Johnny and Bernard in many other projects. These include co producing New Order’s last album and engineering and mixing the vast majority of Johnny Marr’s work over the last 15 years. I have engineered/produced 4 Charlatans albums, and have helped develop many artists as well as being called in to engineer or mix projects for such artists as Hatcham Social, Haven, Longview, Mansun and countless more. I have a lot of experience mixing live concerts in 5.1 surround or stereo for DVD/CD release. Some of the artists I have mixed include Oasis, The Doves, Paul Weller, New Order, The Charlatans, 808 state, Badly Drawn Boy, Echo & The Bunneymen, The Cribs, Johnny Marr, Ian Brown.
My relationship with Charlatans goes back many years and I have exclusive access to their studio, which I helped set up. Big mushroom is a residential studio, a real musicians playground with 2 live rooms, Pro Tools and a large Amek Console. I’m currently taking on a lot of mix projects, and am always on the look out for interesting and exciting new music to work on or develop. I also offer a high end mastering service if required.
More recently, some of my work was featured on Johnny Marr’s sound track to the Antonio Banderas film, The Big Bang.
I am also one quarter of record label OGenesis, with Tim Burgess(Charlatans), Nik Void(Factory Floor) and Nick Fraser(The House Party).
